Palestra | Psst: Hey, you want some of this DNA

Abstract
Bacteria, the tiny creatures that live virtually everywhere in our world, have an amazing ability that scientists are just beginning to understand. In the middle of their lives, bacteria can receive new pieces of DNA from their neighbors to gain new traits. If humans had this ability, they could borrow DNA from their friends and swap traits like hair color or eye color! We will learn all about bacterial DNA transfer, how it drastically affects the world around us, and how scientists study it in the lab. Finally, we will talk about the far-reaching impact it has on human health, and new strategies for controlling and mitigating its effects.
